INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

Mark Gardner

By Mark Gardner

I started Karate training some twelve years ago at the age of 26, having previously spent my time at the gym. Becoming bored with this routine, I tried Karate, liked it and became hooked. I quickly realized that this was an intricate art – much more than just kicking and punching – I got the bug.

Present Level

I graded to 3rd Dan on 17th November 2002, under my Head Instructor Sensei Perry. It was probably the most exhausting grading in Shotokan Karate, but well worth the effort. The most satisfying part of the grading is the pre training months of mental and physical stress. My favourite kind!

Highlights So Far

Going to Japan, the home of Karate – an experience never to be forgotten! I had the honour to train with the National Team – mind blowing.

Competitions

Being a member of the winning team, Team Kumite Trophy at Watford 1997, and Runners Up 1998.

Loves

I enjoy Kata so much the total commitment to performing your favourite Kata, the focus and physical effort is so rewarding, it is better than winning a Kumite bout.

Hates

Missing a training session at the Watford Dojo, especially under the instruction of my mentor, Sensei Gorman, who has trained me since I started. I would like to say that he is doing an exceptional job with all his students.

I would like to finish by saying JSK is a superb organization. We have the very best Head Instructor Sensei Perry, with excellent backup Instructors Sensei Shearer, Gorman, Shephard and others, with the very best instruction for high grades on Saturdays at the Watford Dojo.
