Jin Sei Kai Annual course 2003

by Sensei Peter Edwards

The annual Jin Sei Kai course was held at a new venue, the Greenwood Park Leisure Centre in Chiswell Green, Hertfordshire on Sunday 8th June.

Sensei Gary Battrick took the whole class through a gentle warm-up designed to stretch muscles and set the students up for the whole day. The day was to be divided into three sessions and whilst Sensei Michelle Perry looked after the youngest karate-ka, Sensei Paul Perry took the adults through a combination drill of kicks and turns derived from the ancient Kata Ni Po. The Goju Ryu Kata Sei Pai was practised at the end of the morning session. Application of the moves for both of these Kata was demonstrated by Sensei Perry and later attempted by the students.

The afternoon session was taught by Sensei Paul Shephard and Sensei Mick Gorman. Sensei Shephard took the eclectic approach and had the Kyu grades performing Ticky Donovan inspired competition techniques including take-downs followed by Japanese team game of "chains of attack" where one person after another attacks a line of opponents with left and right handed punches. This calmed down into "Kata for next grading" at the end.

Sensei Gorman chose to emphasize footwork in a 20 move combination of partner attack and defence which he split into three sections. Sadly, only one side was practised as the learning of the sequence bewildered most of the Dan grades and time was called. The last Dan grade only session was taken by Sensei Paul Perry who let the class explore Ni Pai Po and Sei Pai. Towards the end, an early form of Kumite called Tegumi which involved a lot of grappling was demonstrated and attempted by the class.

The general focus for the higher grades was on elements of Karate which are perhaps lost or ignored by most students. This involved more thought than normal square bashing training. Then again it is difficult to spend 6 hours doing stamina type training, and so the mix was appropriate for an annual course.
