Sensei Paul Perry 8th Dan visit to Enfield Town Dojo by Peter Edwards On Wednesday 5th February Enfield Town Dojo had the privilege of participating in a 2 hour master class given by the founder of Jin Sei Kai, Sensei Paul Perry. Both the adults and the children will remember this training session for a long time. Sensei Perry started with basic combinations involving triple punch (Sanbon Zuki) techniques and laid special emphasis on correct stance and hip movement. All grades then added a front kick to this with the senior grades executing their combination from freestyle stance with the correct breathing. All grades then practised the number three Jodan Kihon defence (step 45 degrees to the left blocking Age Uke followed by Keage attack to the chest and Enpi to the ribs). A hip throw was added to show how a simple effective technique can be added to a well known basic. The first half of the lesson ended with a request to demonstrate reverse back kick (Ushiro Geri). All students were given the opportunity to practise this “hard to do” kick and everyone benefited by having the kick broken down into stages, and each stage explained in detail. The second half started with the Kata Bassai-Dai (all grades!). Again the correct posture and stance testing was analysed. Perfection of technique often involves just minor adjustments to body shape, and it was clear that to some students this seemed like magic. Sensei Perry then had all grades attempt the first half of the Kata Hangetsu (lowest grade yellow belt!). The testing of technique (especially the block and grab after the first ki-ai) proved how effective the correct movement and breathing can help a slightly built person deal with someone even twice their weight. The “pushing hand” test to apply power in half moon stance however proved beyond the ability of everyone except Sensei Perry who made it look effortless! As usual time was too short but everybody from yellow belt to fourth Dan was given much to think about. We hope to have Sensei Perry back at our Dojo soon, so watch this space for information about forthcoming events.
