Instructor Profile

Barry Shearer was born on 14th March 1943 and started Karate at a club in Tottenham Polytechnic. He then trained under Sensei John Van Weenan and Sensei Eddie Whitcher (my father) where he trained for four years. He then graded Shodan under Sensei Kanazawa and  continued his training under Sensei Paul Perry. Sensei Shearer is now Sensei Perry's number two instructor and teaches at the Enfield Town Dojo.

Sensei Shearer's favourite moments in Karate:

  • During a course held by one of Japan's top instructors; Kasuya Sensei commended Sensei Shearer's technique to the rest of the class.

  • During Sensei Shearer's Sandan (3rd Dan) grading, the chief examiner, Kanazawa Sensei praised him on his speed and technique in freestyle.

  • Sensei Kanazawa invited Sensei Shearer to come with him to the Milan championships as a representative of one of Kanazawa Sensei's longest-running karate-ka.
